Free Amateur Radio Technician License Class on Saturday, June 5th 2010 with a license exam scheduled for the following Saturday.

The Verde Valley Amateur Radio Club is pleased to announce a free Amateur Radio License course to be held on Saturday June 5th at the Cottonwood Public Safety Building conference room ( 6th Street & Aspen ). The course will start at 8:00 A.M. and will finish about 4:30 P.M. There will be morning and afternoon comfort breaks and a half-hour break for lunch. A bag lunch would be advisable. This course will be a one day session that will cover all of the material required to pass the FCC license exam for the Technician class Amateur Radio license. Note that being able to send and receive Morse Code is no longer a requirement to get your Amateur Radio license.

The recommended text book for this course is The ARRL Ham Radio Technician License Manual, 1st edition, 2006-2009. Textbooks are optional, but we are attempting to obtain sufficient manuals from previous students for this course as this manual will be updated in July 2010 and a new question pool will be used after that date.

Exams for all Amateur Radio license classes will be conducted at the Cottonwood Public Safety Building conference room on the following Saturday, June 12th from 9 a.m. until noon. The cost of the license exam is $15.00. Additional details on the exam will be made available to those attending the Technician License course.

FYI more snow to come!

Mingus Mountain Road Update for Sunday, February 7, 2010:

Upper Mingus Mountain received 8” to 10” of snowfall on Saturday night & early Sunday morning.  The 104A Forest Service road has been snowplowed from Hwy 89A up to the Forest Service Day Use/Picnic area ¼ mile beyond the Mingus Mountain Camp.  The road has become restricted to single lane passage with this additional snow on most of the areas beyond the Forest Service gate.  Pull-off’s are limited.  Currently (5:30pm we are receiving mountain hail-snow but I don’t expect to receive much more new accumulation tonight.  Next storm with precipitation is expected on Wednesday.

The FS road up to the South sites continues to be plugged with heavy snow.  An unsuccessful attempt was made by someone yesterday in a vehicle & it appears to have bogged down within the first 10 yards & made a nice mess of things while backing out.  Sorry, but the additional new snow will just make it worse Southsiders…………L

Even though it was widely rumored that this massage parlor was famous for it’s “happy endings” it still took four agencies to end the happiness. The investigation took a  year – to make sure it was a thorough and complete look into what was going on.

Shortly after noon, 15 to 20 members of Cottonwood Police, the Yavapai County Special Crimes Unit, the PANT drug enforcement unit and federal agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement served a search warrant at the Chinese Massage in the two-story Cottonwood Professional plaza at 830 S. Main St..

James Ray Sweat Lodge Killer?

James Ray was arrested today (Wednesday Feb 3rd) by Yavapai County Sheriff’s at his attorney’s office in Prescott on three counts of manslaughter in the deaths of three participants at an Arizona sweat lodge ceremony he organized last year.

Ray is charged with the deaths of Kirby Brown, James Shore and Liz Neuman.

Ray’s attorney, Luis Li, said that the charges were unjust and that Ray would be exonerated in court.

Wondering what 2nd Degree Murder is? Second-degree murder is ordinarily defined as 1) an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable “heat of passion” or 2) a killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender’s obvious lack of concern for human life. Second-degree murder may best be viewed as the middle ground between first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. (From FindLaw)

Update Feb 4th: James Ray, through his lawyers, accepted responsibility for the deaths in Sedona. However, that doesn’t make it a crime they say.

Found out today that a tree fell on hunters sleeping in their tent last night by milepost 245 on highway 260. One was a tempe firefighter who was killed by the tree falling. It took 1.5 to 2 hours for a passerby to see the survivor and rescue him. Where was the snow plow driver that was maintaining the road – that area is supposed to be maintained. normally the driver goes by every 30 minutes plowing.

I recently made a promotional video for the Old Town Mission in Cottonwood, Arizona. I was really happy to have a chance to make this video for them. They are doing a lot of good work for the local community. One of the things I like most about them is that all donations stay in the local community unlike other charities where your donations leave the community and get redistributed.

Here are some other things I found:

In the last year clientele (those receiving services) has tripled. Those currently receiving services tend to be working families. Of course the elderly has been severely affected. Shockingly, a large number of recipients are families living in their vehicles. Single and dual parents families are roughly equally represented. The average family size contains three children.To help put this in perspective, last year they had 20 regulars for the lunch time program and this year they now have 70.

They currently distribute seven tons of food and eight tons of clothing each month.Tents and sleeping bags are in extremely high demand.

I was intrigued that one of the last things people give up before going homeless is their pets. People tend to give up tv, phone, etc before their pets.

This year, 900 kids received back to school help. That equated to 35% of the Cottonwood/Oak Creek school district.

The Old Town Mission is currently implementing programs to help people transition to self sufficiency. One of the ways they help is by providing people with free haircuts and showers.

Currently, the Old Town Mission has 250 regular volunteers donating 27,000 volunteer hours. With the addition of the new Thrift Store those hours are expected to double.
